Up The First Time

My little dude Henry McKeag surfing for the first time... he got up on his first attempt... and adopted the full forward stink bug style. What a bad ass.

The Best Hotel Room Ever...

... at the Ace Hotel in Portland, OR. It had its own record player & a box full of LPs... which I immediately went pawin' through... there were a few cheesy Xmas records, and the obligatory yet unacceptable options- The Shins, Postal Service, but low and behold... in the back of the box... the first Montrose album. Yeahhhh!!! Now we're talking!!!!

Revisiting A Scene Of Teenage Triumph

Formerly known as the Starry Night... wayyyy back in the 80's... I saw the most inspiring rock show of my young life at this venue: Iggy Pop 1986 on the Blah Blah Blah tour. "Portland- you make my dick hard!" seriously... he said that. And I had a cast on my hand, was towards the front jumping up and down at the beginning of "5 Foot 1" and he grabbed my casted hand... and sang the entire tune to my face. It was fucking incredible. I left that gig wanting to play guitar the way he performed on the mic... if that was possible.

I also snuck in (via a 2nd story window) to see Lynyrd Skynyrd do a secret club gig here a year after the Iggy show. My buddies and I had bought tickets (for $1.92... it was sponsored by local radio station KGON 92 FM), but arrived to find out it was a 21 & up show. We were BUMMED! But we hung around, figuring it was better to listen from outside than not hear 'em at all. They started with "Workin' For MCA"... it sounded amazing and I was nearly pissing myself in frustration that I couldn't get in the door. At some point a few songs in evil Starry Night owner Larry went inside and closed the front doors and we were alone on the sidewalk outside. A passing transient asked- "do you guys want to go inside?". We were like "Fuck yeah!". He pointed upwards explained how we could gain entrance by pulling ourselves up onto the awning that used to ring outside of the building, then simply climb through the open windows above the marquee. He then offered to give us each a boost up so we wouldn't leave anyone behind. I think... I hope... we gave him a few bucks for his MONUMENTAL instructions. More importantly... it actually worked! We all flopped into the club back by the bathroom hallway... to the surprise of more than a few real drunk, straight-outta-Clackamas old (I was 17, remember) Skynyrd fans. I immediately worked my way up front and watched the entire set in a state of total rock & roll rapture- this was the first reunion tour... so Ed King was there, Artimus, etc... and Johnny Van Zant did the right thing during "Free Bird" and simply put Ronnie's hat on the mic stand and let the crowd sing it. So killer. Anyway, it was a rad night. Good thing too... 'cause the next night I got thrown out of their proper Memorial Coliseum gig for being too drunk... but that's another story.

So... it was super fun to return there and rock with the Presidents last week. Loved the room, house crew was really nice and the crowd was way into the show. It wasn't sold out, but they made it sound and feel like it was. Vive Le Starry Roseland Night!

Sports

I chose rock and roll over sports a LONG time ago. Yet this was an irresistable opportunity.

Sky high with The Presidents... Saturday 2/13/10 @ Showbox At The
Market.

Fun gig! Chris got married before our encore. This photo was taken by my good buddy Brian Kasnyik just after Chris bolted for the backstage room to put on his tux, hence the reason his guitbass is parked against the drum riser.
